The Philip Hallawell Method of Themperament Analysis

The method I propose is based on the perception that the face is composed of a set of lines and shapes, which are archetypal symbols.

These symbols are universal and have meanings that any person understands instinctively and unconsciously. The analysis of these lines and shapes, therefore, give a meaning to a person's face and it would be very strange if this had no relation with who the person is in essence: their temperament. The classification system of temperaments, which I use, is that of Hippocrates, developed thousands of years ago in Ancient Greece.

It is important to point out that the method is to evaluate the temperament, the essence of a person, which constitutes 50% of his personality. But one cannot analyse personality by facial features, and this is not the objective. A person's personality develops over many years and is determined by a set of factors: their genetic heritage, the culture of the environment in which they live, their education and their individual experiences. The individual's face also develops over a prolonged period of time, and only reaches its definitive form at the age of twenty-three, accompanying and reflecting the evolution of their experience.

This method is not subjective and does not depend on the memorisation of hundreds of physical characteristics to be put into practice, unlike all other methods, from physiognomy to morphopsychology. We can read a person's face in detail if we know the meaning of the four lines and the four shapes and can identify them in the shape of the face and features, as well as observing the proportions and projections of the features. It is a method that I created based on the knowledge of visual language, which allows us to read the archetypal symbols in the structure of the face, the features, and the colours, to interpret them and associate them with the characteristics of each temperament. It is not credible to imagine that the symbols present and what they express are not related to the temperament. In the animal kingdom there is hardly any incoherence between the visual aspect and the expression, or function.

The analysis serves to stimulate a person to reflect on themselves and which of their characteristics they would like to accentuate, diminish, or complement. The aim is to establish what the person wishes to express through their image. It is not a psychological analysis.

The use of this method, for 15 years, by thousands of professionals, proves its effectiveness.

In 2017, the Institute of Psychology of USP, Hospital das Clínicas and the Ministry of Health accepted this method as the scientific basis of a scientific research, conducted by Dr. Patrícia Alencar, with over one thousand participants. It was the first scientific research in the area of Visagism and proved that people really do read people in a standardized way.
